About Mint Points

On Mint, we wanted to come up with a way to encourage customers to “practice good financial habits” by coming back to the app regularly to check on their finances. One feature we created to combat that is the new Points system. This feature was created in a way to gamify the product and provide customers with incentives to keep returning to the app.

Leaderboard

We also created a leaderboard so that customers could see how they rank among other participants.

To encourage users to interact with the leaderboard, I asked them to add their initials to "unlock their rank."

Problems

There were multiple obstacles when developing the overall design:

  • Customers didn’t understand that points would reset every month (this was to ensure that everyone had a fair chance on the leaderboard and there weren’t any users who were thousands of points ahead).

  • Customers didn’t understand the purpose of points, especially since there were no prizes or any sort of redemption involved.
